"Ninth Gate" is a perfect movie if it is regarded from the viewpoint of Lucas Corso's mental growth. He starts out as a really shrewd business person, excellent in competition, in the rare books field. Then he encounters wealthy Boris Balkan, who needs this mystic book for a pact with the Devil, and wants Corso's help. Emanuelle Seigner plays the mystery woman, with subtle Satanic supernatural qualities, who falls in love with Corso and protects him as he gradually starts a quest for the true meaning of the puzzling book. Yes the ending is weird, but it is connected with Corso's expanded consciousness about love and other riddles of life and that's what makes it such a terrific film for me, new for Polanski with a touch of "Rosemary".
