I found the movie very disappointing, except for the cinematography which was beautiful. There was zero character development - even the central character, Salim, had no substance - kind of staggered throughout life. The mother was real and had something to say about love, but the rest was disjointed, and lacked a central thread that kept the movie together. A book like "A Fine Balance" by Rohan Mistry would have been a better choice for a movie about man's struggle with life using Independence and partition as a backdrop.
