Perhaps the finest con movie since The Sting (1973) David O. Russell (Three Kings) has developed into a fine film-maker with an eye for a good script. Opening is very droll with the proviso that "some of this actually happened."Outstanding acting from Christian Bale, Amy Adams and Jennifer Lawrence (in particular) Lawrence as Rosalyn steals scenes as an agoraphobic, neglected wife with a penchant for self-help books and a manipulator's brain. And just who is conning who-remains a central question in a fast moving film with eye-popping camera swirls and fast-talking characters. The style is reminiscent of Martin Scorcese's Goodfellas (1990) Adams, Bale and Lawrence are Oscar-nominated with Lawrence the strongest candidate for receiving The Best Supporting Actress trophy.
