The title refers to the site of Christ's crucifixion and does suggest that someone will be sacrificed for the sins of the village without pity, wherein many inhabitants are hostile to the efforts of the smart, good-natured, committed priest (Brendan Gleason) to provide comfort and solace to the morally and spiritually wounded. In a secular age where the church is suffering from its own internal scandals, the metaphor of the protagonist's ultimate end will not be lost on the faithful.
