Out of the Lebrea tarpits crawls the reptilian Lou Bloom to video accidents and murders thus providing Los Angeles with the sort of news that it does not need. The seedier side of electronic news gathering is here represented by the narcissistic, callous, charming rat portayed by Jake Gyllenhaal in a powerhouse performance that is reminiscent of the psychopathic Travis Bickle (Robert DeNiro) in Taxi Driver. Lou Bloom is a good person to steer clear of - his ambition knows no bounds; he is not above unethical practices (eg. entering a crime scene before the police arrive and filming the dead victims) Reno Russo as Nina the tv news director - hungry for this material ("if it bleeds, it leads") provides a performance that recalls the amoral, feral Diana Christiansen splendidly played by Faye Dunaway in the classic, Network. The movie is a satire of our voyeuristic society and is a worthy effort not to be missed.
