Vroom Vroom! Zoom-Zoom! There is a great deal of racing footage, but it is inspired. What elevates this movie is a script which allows James Hunt and Niki Lauda to develop as fully fleshed-out characters. Throughout the film it is clear that they both lost the moral support of their families and neither formed solid friendships with their wives or girlfriends. Hunt was constantly surrounded by fair-weather friends and Niki was the abrasive loner whose wife didn't like or appreciate his work. It seems that their closest relationship was with each other, as their rivalry grew into mutual admiration of each other's talents and character. The scene where they exchanged waves from their "cockpits" at the starting point was quite telling. This reminded me of the legendary salute that World War I aces exchanged in the air. These two may have been "frenemies", but they were also friends.
