You may believe that Alan Ladd is too short to be a fearsome gunfighter; or too blonde; or too pretty. There are, though, many moments that elevate this film above the level of horse soap opera, and confining Ladd's activities allows George Stevens to get on with one of the truly bizarre events in the development of the American West; the conflict between cattlemen and farmers. Filmed in Wyoming, 'Shane' received six Oscar nominations and won for 'Best Cinematography'. Perhaps the top on-screen performance belonged to the ill-fated Brandon deWilde, only nine years old while filming and dead at the age of thirty. Jack Palance, with minimal screen time, established himself as one of the most evil characters in Western fiction and Elisha Cooke, Jr. once again played the perennial loser. All screen actors did yeoman service and contributed to 'Shane's reputation as one of the top half dozen Westerns to be released by Hollywood.
