Amazing, that on the heels of John Carter, this movie should be hitting a home run, and Carter getting panned by critics. For one thing, Running Man and Punishment Park have been there and done that, so it's not terribly original. For another thing, in a time, that I understand fully is fantasy, if they have such advanced technology as they displayed throughout the movie in this world, there is no chance whatsoever that even the crappiest handy cam of such a time would look like the junk kind of filming we were subjected to for significant stretches. Way too much in the way of awkward close-ups and shaky cam work. It just seems a ridiculous and utterly unnecessary concept as it in no way creates an impression of realism or authenticity or whatever on earth the director was trying to suggest. Also surprising was this is the same guy who brought us Pleasantville, where directing was a huge plus. Everything about this was very vanilla, not terribly graphic at all, no hard decisions regarding who to kill as they always conveniently made sure anyone likable died at the hands of someone unlikable, so very little in the way of moral dilemmas. The lead actress, Jennifer Lawrence was very likable and no doubt that helped with the reception of the movie, but honestly, this movie will very likely appeal far more to women, particularly teen-aged girls than any guys I know. For me it's tight competition for the Harry Potter movies as the target demographic would be similar. I suppose the Twilight crowd may well eat this stuff up as well, but how anyone liked that junk is beyond me. So there you have it. Clearly the books, which I personally wouldn't enjoy from what little I know, were an incredible spring board for this movie offering. As a 6 rating here indicates, it wasn't bad, though it almost was for me.
