    Wadjda

A gentle film in which a rebellious Saudi teen -a rare entity in strict Saudi Arabia-endeavours to earn money for a bike and learns more about her strict country which does not allow women to drive, vote and insists upon a mode of dress that covers everything. The movie is not shrill or confrontational about the country's traditions which do not allow for either gender or sexual equality. In this first Saudi film (made with great resistance from the authorities) we learn of a modern state (in terms of the availability of cell phones, DVDs and home theatre systems) that remains firmly entrenched in the past. With youngsters like Wadjda there may be change in the future. Utterly charming and a good candidate for one of the year's best.
