Kristin Wiig's quirky performance as a sufferer of borderline personality syndrome (although she also appears to display some autistic traits) is a saving grace in this oddball, mixed-bag of a movie. If the character of Alice invites us to giggle at her antics; this places the viewer in an uncomfortable position of making mirth of one person's situation that is no laughing matter. This movie could be a useful way of informing people about a peculiar personality disorder, that is very difficult to treat as is presented in the scenes with the therapist (Tim Robbins) We learn through the course of the story line that Alice is indeed narcissistic, self-centred, impulsive and largely callous and unconcerned about others' feelings. Add to the mix criminal tendencies and Alice would be a sociopath (which she is not, I hasten to add) Comedy does occur following Alice's purchase of a personal tv program, but the laughs are strained. The filmmakers are walking a very thin tightrope between comedy and drama. This one is a bit of an acquired taste.
