"A Place in the Sun"… for sure an ambitious effort and one of the few films to address the subject of class conflict in America. It's a solid movie, occasionally heavy and slow moving, the unending tragedy perhaps all too inevitable. Nevertheless, this is poignant material directed beautifully by George Stevens who won an Oscar for this 1951 film direction. Montgomery and Liz express a true tenderness and passion that goes beyond what words can say. They are electric together, immortal screen lovers for all time. Arguably, the most memorable performance belongs to a deglamorized Shelley Winters who received an Academy Award Nomination as Best Actress as the plain girlfriend who Monty wishes would vanish once he starts a move up the ladder. Based on the novel "An American Tragedy", this feature is tragedy on every level.
