'All Fall Down' was adapted for the screen by Oscar Winner William Inge and centres on a dysfunctional Cleveland family headed by alcoholic Karl Malden and domineering Angela Lansbury. Warren Beatty plays a louse of a drifter persuaded by younger sibling Brandon de Wilde to return home. Eva MarieSaint rounds out a first rate cast who unfortunately becomes involved with Beatty. Inge and director Frankenheimer concentrate on the darker side of the American family, exploring a bruised familial psyche with numerous open wounds. Thanks to the screenplay and direction, the film cuts deeper than the usual gothic drama. In this film, all are in fine fettle, but it is Angela Lansbury who walks away with the acting honours though Barbara Baxley is very fine in a small but potent role.
