As a youngster I recall watching Whirlybirds on tv in the 1950s. Little did I know that the director was the later-to-be famous auteur, Robert Altman whose output would include great films (M*A*S*H, Short Cuts, The Player) and those not so hot (Quartet, Popeye, Ready-To-Wear) His career certainly had its ups and downs including various illnesses. One important fact revealed was his desire to treat his ensemble casts like family and many actors (Michael Murphy, Shelly Duvall) worked with him on several projects. Although, there is not a great deal revealed that is new, this journey through his life and career is a loving homage to a great, independent film artist and is a must-see for all lovers of fine, thoughtful cinema.
