This is the ultimate in Hollywood romance, but I did see Leo McCarey's original version of An Affair to Remember from the 1940's starring the glorious IRENE DUNNE and SUAVE Charles Boyer with the remarkable Russian MARIA OUSPENSKAIA as the grandmother. The remake with KERR and GRANT is virtually the same in every way, though the screenplay must have been tweaked a bit for the 1950's audience. The bitter sweet romance benefits from the presence of actors at the top of their game. Could anything be more splendid than Kerr and Grant in a virtual feast for the eyes? Unfortunately the 3rd remake with Warren Beatty, Annette Bening and Kate Hepburn as the grandmother was pretty much a disaster. Why would Beatty try to follow up 2 smash hits of AN AFFAIR? Audiences of the time were just not interested in this type of romantic film. An Affair to Remember truly epitomized Hollywood's golden age.
