Promoted as a Louise Brooks vehicle, top billing actually went to Wallace Beery. Beery played a soft-hearted vagabond with a hard reputation and was full value for his position as one of Hollywood's leading actors during the Silent Screen era. Ms. Brooks did get a lot of screen time, her character being central to the plot. Brooks, disguised as a lad, spent a great part of the film hopping trains in an attempt to avoid the law.'Beggars of Life' is considered Ms. Brooks best American film and I do believe that her charm would be apparent both on and off screen even if she were wearing a burlap sack from head to toe.
