If you plan to see this tragic drama, put all thought of American made Mafia films out of your head. Not that said American films are all of the extraordinary type! No! We have had some honest works that go far deeper into a subject (Mafia) that is usually merely skimmed on the surface. In "Anime Nere", we find families bound by blood in the worst of ways, ties that go back even into the 19th century. This is not a Sicilian based Mafia film and all the better for it. We are in Calabria, in the rocky extremes of a usually destitute Southern Italy. Daily life is tenuous at best, the peace as slender as it gets. It's all like a powder keg that can go off at any moment. And so it is that in one family with four sons, the hot headed, impetuous 20 year old will alter matters in ways that can't be imagined. Of Italian origin, I think I can safely say that not one iota of bad blood is ever forgiven or forgotten in the frightening, treacherous regions of Sicily and Calabria, the deep Meridionale (South) parts of Italy where things WILL NEVER GET BETTER! The Mafia is just another way of life much like the Church and its trappings.
