An applaudable Directorial process warrants viewing. Ethan Hawke is the strongest performer as an eventually maturing dad who undertakes various amusing efforts to maintain a connection with his children during the twelve years that pass during the film. The actor playing the coming of age 'boy' is of course going to be inconsistent and at his most mature stage unfortunately displays considerable lack of breadth. But in such a lengthy format, these are the risks you run. There is some original material in this coming of age movie as the mother struggles to find a functional long term relationship without too much damage to her children, but she and her partners remain quite caricaturish throughout. The sister starts strong then effectively disappears as the movie evolves. Perhaps intentional, perhaps associated with acting skill, though she seemed the more interesting character to me.
