The best way to explain this movie is that it tries to show light in the midst of darkness. I give the movie credit for trying to deal with sensitive subject matter and trying to tie the storyline from beginning to end. The cinematography and the landscape of Ireland are beautiful. However, the movie was not what I expected. The town felt like the most morbid place on the planet. I also found most of the characters in the movie unrealistic (not to mention overly creepy) The way sensitive topics were portrayed I found many times crude and disrespectful. The discussion of theological issues which was supposed to be the cornerstone was not deep enough and showed the lack of knowledge by the writer of the film. I understand what the underlying theme of the movie is but in the end I don’t believe the film achieved the message it was intending for.

As I said in my review the director doesn't capture the entire picture as it is really too daunting a task. But saying the film didn't achieve its objective and to give it a 4 is absolutely preposterous. This is a film of real merit. The low rating is an insult and shows you didn't get even a hint of what you call the message. THERE IS NOT JUST ONE MESSAGE IN THIS FILM! There is so much that is discussed, so much given for good discussion that I simply think you missed the boat on this one. Read my review. I think you will understand the film better. Even if it didn't convey fully what you call the message, whatever that is, there's an overabundance of material of real matter. That's part of the problem. There is so much the director is attempting that there is no possible way he can fulfill the vision fully. I would love to debate the issue with you. Please try to rate a film a bit more properly. THIS IS NOT a 4 film. What is the film supposed to mean in your eyes? I would like to know.
You are entitled to your opinion, as I fully am. I stand by my review. Free speech and I understood the so-called many messages the movie was going for as you say - though it failed miserably. I would have preferred the movie be based on an actual true story instead of this dark fictional world created around the priest. If you want the serious issues brought forth, do a movie based on the facts of a true story (and not to parallel, combine, and sensationalize many stories all together into one movie) - there are plenty out there to choose from and to expose everything - especially when it comes to dealing with such important themes. Don't need to try to create a fictional twisted story having so much vulgarity with unrealistic over the top characters throughout the movie. I am a Christian and I reserve the right to completely disagree with your rating as I find it over the top. This is a 4 by far. We will agree to disagree.
