I found it to be a very well-made movie with good acting. Having married a man whose family was from a small village in Quebec where the main source of yearly income was logging, I know the movie was very authentic in its representations of that part of Quebec history. The legend itself was passed on from father to son, to son from the end of the 19th to the turn of the 20th century. But it had since disappeared from our folklore going back a generation or two. That it was chosen to be made into a film probably served some purpose for people of my generation. Mere nostalgia I think but it no doubt offered a chance for some interesting discussions about the forces of good vs the forces of evil.
