An emotionally repressed man unable to grieve the death of his wife begins to realize the shallowness of his existence and begins to take things apart from appliances to computers, a cubicle door at his workplace, which eventually progresses to the demolition of his house. These actions become a metaphor… by demolishing almost everything around him to find his truth that allows his grief to emerge.
Jake Gyllenhaal gives an honest emotional performance. Naomi Watts who befriends him through an unusual correspondence gives a lack luster performance. Maybe because her character is stoned on pot throughout the movie. Judah Law who plays her teenage son gives an outstanding performance. He has great on screen charisma. I loved the soundtrack from Heart to Gil Scott Heron… it was a very unique musical selection.
The movie's theme is somewhat hard to swallow at times and some of the scenes come across like sound bytes where I was needing to fill in the blanks. The script gets lost in translation and the ending of this film becomes a convoluted mess.
