    For Whom the Bell Tolls

Ernest Hemingway created a sensation with his novel on the Spanish Civil War of the 1930's. The novel translated beautifully to the screen under the direction of 'one take' Sam Wood. The colour cinematography for 1944 was as beautiful as it was rare. Gary Cooper and Ingrid Bergman are perfectly cast as the star crossed lovers, so charismatic in this particular screen adaptation of the book... The film garnered so many deserved Oscar Nominations including one for director Sam Wood, Akim Tamiroff as Supporting Actor and Oscar Winning Supporting Actress of 1944, Katina Paxinou, who would go on to playing very few film roles despite her Oscar win. A huge hit in its day which deserves to be seen in 2016.
