"Fright Night" is a smart horror comedy with some great performances and a clever script. A remake of the 1985 film, it tells the story of Charley (Anton Yelchin), a regular teenager who discovers that his next door neighbour (Colin Farrell) is a vampire. With the police not being the first people you would go to for help in this kind of situation, Charley will require some significant aid from his best friend Edward “Evil Ed” (Christopher Mintz-Plasse), his girlfriend Amy (Imogen Poots) and a TV personality that claims to be an expert on the occult (David Tennant as Peter Vincent) to prevent this undead menace from eating the entire neighborhood.

What's great about the movie is that it doesn't fall into the usual trappings of the "monster next door" story. Within 15 minutes of the movie both you and Charley knows that Colin Farrell is a vampire. I love that. This is a remake and the film treats it as such because it wastes no time getting to the meat of the story. From there, the movie continues making smart decisions, like having Charley not waste time trying to convince adults and authorities that he's living next door to a vampire, having him use the internet to find useful information like how to pick locks or where to find experts that could help him out and having him get weapons in case of an attack. Finally, a movie with a hero that’s as intelligent as the audience watching him. With this smart protagonist, we've got a really cool villain. Jerry the vampire is charismatic but dangerous and actually feels like a 400 year-old monster because he rarely lets Charley get the best of him; he always has a back-up plan to get the pesky teenager. Once again, it shows that the people in charge of making this movie were aware of the audience watching it. We know how the story is going to play out for the most part, so it relies on smartly written characters and a clever story to keep us invested. The side characters are also fun with Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Toni Collette and Imogen Poots also playing smart, interesting characters that you really care about and not just oblivious would-be victims. I was actually surprised by how many times the movie threw me for a loop because it looked at the typical structure of a movie like this and said “you know what, maybe we can do better” and took plot points in totally different directions.

The film is gory and funny, with some good scares and more than one moment that will take you by surprise because you really didn't see it coming. There are a few minor moments where characters act a little stupid (towards the last third of the movie where they ditch their weapons way too quickly) but most of the time it doesn't stick to the familiar horror clichés. 2011's "Fright Night" is a smart, scary and funny remake that really works and it's tons of fun; don't let your love for the original discourage you from seeing this one because you'll have a blast. (2-D version on Blu-ray, January 11 2013)
