A 50's CRUSADE MOVIE headed by King Richard, precisely 1954, with great stars from Rex Harrison, Virginia Mayo, Laurence Harvey and George Saunders roaming around as if lost in a totally unrealistic, absurd costume epic that can be quite laughable today. The only thing that mattered in those days was the amazing colour and Cinemascope to lure people away from their television sets to actually going to a theatre for a movie. Script and plot wise, it's all a joke. Those 1940's and 50's costume epics have not stood the test of time. Many like THE EGYPTIAN, Désirée ( with Marlon Brando as Napoleon), Knights of the Round Table and especially THE SILVER CHALICE (Paul Newman's first film, 1954/5) and more have gone down to ignominy as nothing but worthless pieces of junk. I WAS GOING TO GIVE THE FILM A VERY GENEROUS 3 but decided that would be blasphemy! The 2 is for the CINEMASCOPE and lavish colour! I wouldn't watch the film again were I paid a small fortune.
