This historic film based on Victor Hugo's 'LES MISERABLES is an early effort from the French to capitalize on a story that had become a universal sensation even while Hugo was still alive. It would be ludicrous to relate the tale of Jean Valjean and the other classic characters from this masterpiece as they are known to almost all, even the young due to the musical version of the story filmed a few years back. Director Raymond Bernard was overly ambitious and it would seem he would have liked to film every sequence of the novel. That indeed is one of the drawbacks of this 1934 MISERABLES. It is so lengthy at almost 5 hours that one seems to lose the thread of the essential story by cramming so much into the feature. The film, unfortunately, remains in relative obscurity. I would presume that at the time (1934) the film would have been shown in at least two parts. This I do not know. It's just an obvious presumption for so lengthy a flick!
