Forster, author of 'Maurice', was called a trifle meliciously: " the closet queen of the century," by his biographer. Forster's life could be of some interest to gays and lesbians. He never was out of the closet, but did have a lover Bob Buckingham. His coming out was through a posthumous publication in 1971 of his tenderly romantic gay love story "Maurice" written in 1914 and locked away, never to be published until his death.
The characters and the story in the novel were based on an actual incident while he was a student at Cambridge. The movie is resplendent in mood and atmosphere and addresses both gay and straight love with, abandon, but Forster emphasizes the gay love story which he wanted to end happily. The Hero "Maurice" is nothing like Forster having every grand humanly gift possible plus brains and being a snob, to boot. Into this mixture he drops the working boy Scudder who puzzles him, wakes him up, torments him and finally saves him... is virtually saved by a beautiful uneducated boy who knows how to love too well.
