Hard to rate this depressing film. Well acted with strange dysfunctional relations between characters. The message of this film relates to all of us because we're all going to have our Melancholia (death) whether it's natural or disastrous. The question remains, is this all there is to this life? If so, we are hopeless. I don't subscribe to this point of view. We are wired for hope and life. We are "not alone". This film preaches the message of atheism; No GOD or life after this one. Even though I disagree with the message of the film, I am glad it's brave enough to deal with the subject. Wake people up to the reality of our mortality. I can't say to enjoy this film (because you won't) If you decide to see it, seek other views for the good news of life beyond this one (a good place to start is the gospel of Jesus)

After a sleepless night following the viewing of the movie I came to see things as you describe them so well in your review. There is no hope in this movie and no God for sure. Everything is left to a random accident in a vast cold universe. Maybe we have to fight against the temptation of dispair in the face of suffering and death which remain, to us, a total mystery but I tend to agree with you when I see reality under another angle: how come do we and everything else exist and why? If the message of the Gospels is true, as I believe it is, then there is a great hope that goes far beyond our perception of even the most cataclismic event. The positive message of the movie is that we must be prepared for our death giving nothing for granted and trying to live this life with compation and mutual help.
