The flick has elements of a Huck and Tom sort of blank unquestioning (not innocent) spirit where the two young boys due to a lack of parental influence, get involved in issues that only could have been spawned in a violent society where love is idolized and guns are the only thing that levels the playing field between rivals. It could just have easily been an ancient Arabic Sinbad-style or Alladin-esque film but plays out in the US context to make it their own. The Jem type of (To Kill A Mockingbird) of connection doesn't really materialize like I think the author intended but still has a good honest feel to the film. If it wasn't for the anticlimax "abandonment of dreams" conclusion that held zero validity to the premise outlined as the antihero's motivation really made the movie appear silly in direction. Too bad. Ahh, Harriwood!! (Quote from the movie "1941")
