    Out of the Furnace

Great performances by Christian Bale, Woody Harrelson, Willem Dafoe and Casey Affleck. Outstanding performance by Affleck and in his usual fashion, Christian Bale continues to shine. It was a pleasure to see him out of Batman costume and in a more substancial role. As in "The Fighter." It is a simple story, set in a simple region of the Northeast US where poverty seems to be the norm. There is always the dream for a better life for some and broken dreams for others. This dramatic thriller keeps your attention throughout the film with its largely predictable plot once we get well into the movie. However, the strong silence of Russell (Bale) in contrast to the intense rage that is always looming inside Rodney (Affleck), makes a stark difference in these two brothers; a contrast which helps to move the entire plot along in an interesting, sometimes heartbreaking fashion. It is a moving picture without all the Hollywood hype. It speaks about redemption, sadness, the human condition, justice, the effects of war on our vets and the need to have faith in the face of fear. It is a movie well worth seeing and Pearl Jam fans will love the score. Great cast, music that aligned with the story, a setting of simplicity and mystery that supported the characterizations and plot of the story. Casey Affleck may just win an Oscar for his wonderful supporting role.
