The film discusses the hypocrisy and the cover-ups in the Church and is hence very topical. But this crowd-pleaser is more about the personal story of Philomena, a complex woman of faith and modernity who is on a quest to find closure in her life. The contrast between her and the educated, cynical, atheistic journalist leads to fiery discussions over the meaning of life. There are great twists and turns and in the end Philomena finds answers with Coogan's help and he in turn gains in insight and warmth. Judi Dench is likely to receive an Oscar nomination for her bravura performance.
