As soon as I witnessed the previews, I said to myself: Ron Howard does not make bad films. What an original and intriguing story for this genre; one I believe I have never seen to date, regardless of the fact that I don’t like car racing. High velocity action, great characterizations, and incredible footage (perhaps some real) highlight this film and even more compelling was the true story from which the movie was based. A very heartfelt, moving picture of two polar opposite characters who are driven by the same passion of their extreme sport but who look at life so differently. Lauda's character, I believe is even more complex. His painful recovery, almost made me feel as though I was watching a torture scene; very intense as is the entire film. Both Hemsworth and Bruhl play their roles authentically and extraordinarily well. The audience will like them at times, even be moved but will have disdain for them at other times. This gripping movie holds you at the edge of your seat while you try to understand the complexity of the inner layers that unfold from each character, with a continuous backdrop of great visuals and overt messages. It is a real education about Formula 1 racers, their passions, thrill seeking and death defying acts. But it's the inner portraits of Lauda and Hunt that really captivate the audience. Great, solid and intelligent writing by Peter Morgan and very realistic. I love bios and this film was one of my favourites this year; definitely an Oscar contender.
