Irwin Allen would be very proud of this disaster film, for it embraces all the dumb qualities of the genre and then some. Cheesy dialogue, heavy-handed sentimentality, an impossibly hot mother/daughter combo even by Hollywood standards, and of course, terrifying special effects. Now Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is no Olivier but he is perfectly cast here as a rescue pilot who must navigate utter hell in order to save his estranged wife and daughter when the San Andreas fault lines shift, collapse (or do whatever fault lines do) What follows is a non-stop thrill ride, employing first-rate CGI and achieving exactly the kind of amusement park excitement its trailer promised. Well made and throughly entertaining, even if I'm getting kinda sick of watching California sink into the ocean.
