Despite its length on the clock, this film fairly moved along.
I'm not of a generation, nor inclination to fully admire rap music. I do think the best artists will succeed and get to the peak, in whatever genre they pursue. There's not a little " Amadeus" in this story!
LAPD's act is well documented by now, and disgraceful. Hardly any virtues practiced in the "winning hearts and minds" argument, at all.
While the subjects of this film followed and attained their dream, a lost generation is devoid of the option.
This is a well made film, opened my eyes and ears somewhat. The benefit of art well done.
Much of what is depicted as the trappings of success isn't admirable in most circumstances. Neither were Sinatra's, or Elvis' excesses.
The acting excellent, by all, the production design laudable, and the whole picture gels well. Doubt you could get a better cast.
Very well scripted, and directed, award worthy.
Still, I expected to be transformed, and I felt let down a bit, that way.
As a musical bio-pic it's very, very good.
Great film? Sort of, but not fully.
It will not displace "Boyz in the Hood" or "Menace to Society" on my list, both truly landmark films. The are about similar sociology, from a different perspective.
"Straight Outta Compton" is an 8, in my book, 8.5 if I had the option.
