Submarine is exceptional in its penetration of teen identity and the struggle to accept the disappointment that real-world ambiguity imposes on us. The performances are brilliant, the writing tight. The characters very well-drawn, and there's not a cliche in sight. It's inventive, insightful, and highly entertaining. It's not Hollywood, it's Cardiff. And that's part of its integrity, authenticity and charm.
