    The Amazing Spider-Man

Admittedly, I thought the idea of rebooting a franchise so soon was a daft and profit driven exercise in studio cynicism. Plus the original Spiderman trilogy (safe for part 2) wasn't exactly confidence inspiring material to riff of off. Yet this reboot is pretty damn entertaining if you check your brain at the door. Newcomer Andrew Garfield is much closer to the smart-ass spidey from the cartoons of yore and he and real life girlfriend Emma Stone make the most of their on-screen teenage romance. Yet for me, the success of these types of films hinges solely of the villain and Rhys Ifans' Lizard is as well done as could be expected, though somewhat underused. Ok so the film takes its time sifting through the old Spiderman legend covering overly familiar ground but once it gets going it's a lot of fun, much darker than the first 3. The film isn't great enough to make as convincing a case for being remade as say Nolan's Batman franchise, but it is thoroughly enjoyable nonetheless.
