Based on the autobiographical novel by writer Jim Carroll, this tawdry drama features a miscast Leonardo Di Caprio as the teenage Jim and follows him from his days as a punkish but promising basketball player and aspiring writer to his steady descent to a pitiful drug-addicted loser. There are many problems with the film whose material has been handled much better in features of similar themes. And then there's the total mishandling of a gay sup-plot which should come as no surprise. It's a pretty sloppy film.
