Robert Redford and Michael Ritchie's hugely important political drama of 1972. A young candidate wants to run for the U. S. Senate as he feels people's needs are not being met, the issues are not being discussed and on the back burner is always a sense of corruption! The film won an Oscar for best-adapted screenplay for '72... The film resonates all the more because Robert Redford produced and starred in this independent film with a very small budget, away from the large STUDIO produced movies! It all led to what we now know as 'indie' films with their own awards and Mr. Redford's ultimate creation, THE SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL, as famous as Cannes in our day and age! Along with Robert Redford, the truly great cast includes a young Peter Boyle, Don Porter and venerable, 2 time Oscar Winner, the iconic Melvyn Douglas! Great thanks to TURNER for presenting it on July 18, 2015 as part of The Essentials.
