The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies

There have been many reviews comparing the Hobbit trilogy to the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and many other reviews pointing out that this set of movies is inevitably going to be compared to the Lord of the Rings. I have seen many reviews saying "it's good, but it's not as good as Lord of the Rings", and generally, I agree. However, looking just at The Battle of the Five Armies, it is a fantastic movie; not only the best of the Hobbit trilogy, but it even compares favourably to The Lord of the Rings. While the movie can be called bloated with a few scenes that are confusing in their inclusion, uneven, and being incapable of standing on it's own without previous knowledge of the other two Hobbit films; this movie is simply a cinematic experience that must be seen on the big screen. It is equally exciting, tense, epic, and emotional. From the title alone, you know that a certain battle is going to be prominently featured, and it does not disappoint. The battle itself, which consumes half of the film's run-time is probably the best I have experienced in a theatre, and rivals many of the epic scenes from the Lord of the Rings trilogy although I will admit I was too young to see those movies in theatres. The scope, grandness, choreography and special effects of this film make it the best movie experience I have had this year. The tension running through the story draws you in and adds layers of sympathy to the characters, helping the movie avoid the "empty action" trap that many effects-driven spectacles fall into. I was surprised at the emotional tug this movie had, which was much greater than the previous two Hobbit films. Narrative points and character developments aside, the fact that this is (presumably) the last time we visit Middle-Earth carries its own emotional weight. The very end of this movie, which leads right into the opening of Lord of the Rings, is quite amazing in the way it ties everything together. A truly visual spectacle that is not without its flaws, The Battle of The Five Armies is one of my favourite movies of the year, and is the first time I have ever experienced applause from the audience when the credits rolled. So, if you're a fan of Middle-Earth, why haven't you already seen Battle of the Five Armies?
