    The Lunchbox

Far from the gaudy excesses of Bollywood arrives this small, sly subtle film about loneliness amidst the massive hustle and bustle of modern Mumbai. It's about the memories and regrets of two people (Irrfan Khan, Nimrat Kaur) who carry on a virtual relationship without the use of social media. In fact this is a low tech movie. Cell phones are not seen in heavy use and there are no PCs in Saajar's office! The exterior shots show the terrible crowding on the streets and in the commuter trains. People are jammed into spaces armpit to armpit like sardines. (One hopes that there is liberal use of deodorants) One peculiar conceit involves referring to Sajaan as an old widower poised for retirement -he is referred to as "uncle." The jet-black haired Khan is only 46. Apparently in India one is half-dead when reaching the age of 40!
