    The Reluctant Fundamentalist

Great direction by Mira Nair and Riz Ahmed definitely carried the movie, although Keifer Sutherland was outstanding in the depiction of his role and Liv Schreiber as per usual, gave a great performance. I too agree about Kate Hudson. I think that character could have been cast differently, although perhaps there were reasons that she portrayed as she did. I haven’t read the book and I think that there are some good inferences here and strong statements, however controversial. I think that something most reviewers perhaps did not pick up on or chose to ignore, was one of the strongly pointed out themes in the last part of the film; the SIMILARITY with the American Wall Street ideology and Changez’s view of the radical fundamentalism ideology. Nair does a great job at revealing this to the audience and the revelation in Changez’ mind showed clearly that neither one was acceptable to him, despite his torn emotions. If you are a true thinker, then you must first be true to yourself! I think this "perceived enemy" is all around us in the world, omnipotent and as my dying father revealed in a letter to me, it’s too bad we cannot all get along in this world despite race, creed, color, ideologies, religion…Racism I believe, begins at home and when young. It is a parent’s job, and a free thinker’s job to be good teachers to their children otherwise the world is on self-destruct mode. We see contrasts between Pakistan and New York but we also see some disturbing similarities if you look closely. Perception is critical and we have to not make assumptions as that is very dangerous. Innocent until PROVEN guilty for all people as we are all God’s children. The music was beautiful and sad at times but I think that followed the emotions in the story well. I enjoyed the music and love to learn about other cultures. Too bad that everyone is not of that mindset as we ALL must be careful to not stereotype any group. The audience was very small in number, and it definitely was a different kind of film for me, one that I perhaps would not have gravitated to. We just have to be careful to read between the lines, listen intently to both sides and look realistically at what we KNOW to be true in this world. I believe, personally that extreme radicalism of any kind is dangerous and noone should be forcing their ideals on anyone else... too many atrocious acts in the world with no respect for human life and violence is not the answer. As my father says, what a wonderful world it Could be...
