Long ago in films like The Zero Effect and Permanent Midnight, Ben Stiller proved he could do a lot more than just mug for the camera, displaying a dramatic range far beyond what he is usually called upon for. With The Secret Life of Walter Mitty he proves that again and also proves he's got some talent behind the camera as well. Mitty's daydreams are fun, surprising and always beautifully shot. Yet the film's message about embracing life and taking chances is always front and centre and is never drowned out by all the noise and CGI. Sean Penn is also perfectly cast as the ever elusive photographer whom Mitty is desperate to find. A film that can be enjoyed by the whole family, which these days, is a victory in it of itself.
