I was pleasantly surprised at what is well tread territory - death of a relative draws eccentric family dynamics together and into conflict. Last year's 'Osage County' raised the bar somewhat, replacing comedy with desperation. Too much comedy softens of interesting drama, too little and it gets very dark. This film attempts a combo of the two but doesn't achieve the dramatic tension. Too much irrelevant slap stick. Fair enough, if that's the objective, but with a cast of this dimension, it's a waste. The surprise here was there was a enough character distinction that the strong acting ability was able to produce very interesting characters. Unfortunately, there wasn't enough time given to each to make that fully successful and there were too many layers in the time allotted to allow a satisfying narrative. It could have gone another hour and perhaps produced something of quality.
