Terrence Malick has become the master of the poetic and surreal. To the Wonder is a continuation of some the ideas put forth in The Tree of Life; the characters encounter difficulties in their yearnings to establish permanent connections with each other and with God. This film presents the loneliest of people that I have ever seen. The married couple are unable to maintain their relationship and the priest (in a crisis of faith) becomes estranged from his God. As usual-in a Terrence Malick film-it is stunningly photographed. But, this is a slowly paced movie and is for those who enjoy the wonder of the director.
