    Two Women

Sofia Loren was the very first actor to win an Academy Award for a foreign language film (La Ciociara) directed by Vittorio De Sica in 1961. She plays an anguished mother trying to protect her daughter from the horrors of WWII. In Two Women Sofia Loren was able to break free of the sexpot mold Hollywood had assigned her. Hers was a deglamorized role playing older than her chronological years, her earth mother role in the vein of the great Anna Magnani absolutely superb The climax of the film will break your heart. 1961 was a really tough year in the Best Actress category and many insiders called "fowl' that the award went to an outsider. Jean-Paul Belmondo is superb as Michele, the studious objector to the war. A film that must be experienced.
