Unfriended. Uninspired. Unentertaining. Like a carnival ride that looks good and scary from the outside, but leaves you queasy and lighter in the wallet is Unfriended. Ostensibly a contemporary comment on cyber-bullying, it amounts to low production value and cheap shocks. Worst is the split screen that divides rather than concentrates your attention.
From a gratuitous and borderline obscene opening suicide, Unfriended proceeds through an hour of online chat amongst an annoying group of young people. Forget about character or caring for any of them.
If there is an upside it is in some of the dialogue between the deceased and the heroine, Blaire (an homage to The Blair Witch), but these interesting and potentially enlightening exchanges are invariably interrupted by somebody else shrieking down the phone.
Though the idea has promise, things go from weak to pitiful. A profit has probably already been made as the budget appears to have been about ten dollars.
You'll kick yourself unless you choose something else on movie night.
