As another reviewer stated, performances were great, but somehow this movie lacked something, did not engage with any emotional depth. I'm really wondering why we have such a fascination with the brutality of homicidal psychopaths. It was shocking to see people bring their children to this film, because the violence was gratuitous, emotionally empty and graphic for no supporting reason. Even Breaking Bad was more gripping in its depiction of mob killings. I am not enough of a film expert to understand why I felt empty, almost desensitized against my will, by the way this story was presented. I felt it was shallow and trite, with nothing memorable in the way it told a story that has been at the heart of a long history of this movie genre. Johnny Depp was chillingly adept, but the alliance he forged with the FBI not sufficiently developed. Nothing to do with the terrific cast. Just poor writing. Too formulaic.
