I think the director managed to capture the look and feel of the time period. That's about it however. There was so much dark humor that I couldn't tell if it was a dark comedy or a crime-suspense drama - which I thought it was going to be. The plot and sub-plots just seemed way too confused. It really didn't even focus on the "Black Dahlia" - the focus seemed to be more the cop's lovelife. It was a directionless piece of cinema. Usually Brian de Palma is much better than this.
