I found Max's character to be unconvincing - he comes across as a spoiled brat with rage issues who should probably be on ritalin. If we as the viewer had more background detail and saw more character development - it would be easier to at least empathize with Max. The "Wild Things" themselves were well done - it was visually stunning - but it fell flat with the storyline.

The first indication was his relationship with his teenage sister. The second was dealing with his moms new boyfriend. Trust me. My parents divorced when I was 10. It was not pretty.

Another thing I noticed is that the movie showed no consequences to violence - there was no consequence when Max bit his mother. Now if I had a kid that did that they would be in therapy and there would be consequences - because that is unacceptable behaviour.
Kids have to learn, putting them in therapy or on ritalin isn't going to change anything, it might make it worse. Max just wanted love from his mom when she was ignoring him for her new boyfriend.
