Great fun to watch! Needs to watched critically, I agree. There are some arguments in the movie that I do not agree with but, that does make it a bad movie. Studied English lit and went to uni in Durham brought back great memories. Oh the pizza!!!

I grew up in England and went to school in the late 70's and 80's and this movie brought it all back. It was so much fun to watch and the humour was a breath of fresh air. I could not contain my laughter. It was hilarious. I am going to see it again.

A witty engaging film showcasing a number of remarkable actors. Known to many people from their Harry Potter roles (as Vernon Dursley and Madame Maxime), Richard Griffiths and Frances de la Tour are wonderfully convincing as "Hector" and "Tot". One cannot help liking Hector, despite his reprehensible behaviour outside the school, and Tot's kind heart is completely unobscured by her garish lipstick and occasional attempts to shock. Young Samuel Barnett who plays the role of "Posner" will doubtless mature into an actor of note. His take on his exquisitely difficult role is almost flawless and his powers as a mimic are remarkable. Although the plot is contrived (to the point of surreality at the end), the film conveys very effectively, the determination and struggles of a group of young men who have set themselves a difficult goal and who pursue it with energy and humour. The exception to this is poor "Rudge", along for the ride, as it were, and constantly humbled by his perceived inferiority to his fellows. I enjoyed the literary and cinematic allusions, although these involved some false steps--for example, the notion that "Irwin", the new teacher, wouldn't instantly have recognized Auden's "Musée des beaux-arts" seems improbable, at least to this viewer. This film, while imperfect, is definitely more than worth the price of admission. Don't miss it!

I think that this movie was absolutely magical in it's deliverance and this must be in part because of the actors familiarity with the script (supposedly the same that performed it on stage) as well as Alan Bennet being the writer of the story (true) This movie was so thought provoking because it was actually saying something, and I think it's really sad if the movie didn't connect with everyone that watched it because it made me look more closely at education (my own) and the world, and society and really everything. A truly brilliant movie that everyone should give at least one chance. (the songs also gave the movie a little extra, as well as the un-translated french scene) Left me quite speechless and devoted to all the characters and the actors and actresses that played them. Five Stars Completely!

Interesting dialog, mature topics. A bit slow at times. When it comes to moral value; that which is wrong is deemed ok. Wrongs are glossed over. Must watch critically.

What a movie... even for today the topic of latent and/or blatant homosexuality is still sometimes frowned upon. The storyline is sincere and forthright... and the actors are very comfortable (I. E. appearing natural) in their portrayals. It is heartwarming to see such young actors deliver such witty and convincing performances. I rate it a masterpiece in relation to all other coming of age movies that we have seen.

What a disastrous waste of film! Quite insipid and lacklustre. If you have a sense of genuine humour or any measure of vivacity, avoid seeing this film at all costs. [...]

Brilliant film! Accurately describes the tension with applying to Oxbridge. Some lovely shots of the Colleges and a great soundtrack (if you like new order/the smiths/the cure... ) If you ever went to school in England, or if you're a teacher, I think it's a must-see.

This movie was such a bore! Very dry and british humor which was hard to understand. We walked out 45 minutes into it and got a refund...

Extremely thought provoking, witty and brilliantly directed. A feel good movie with a message or two.

Lots to mull over with this film. A slice of life and the British class system. Don't get frightened; it is not high toned at all. A true story of working class struggles with a healthy dose of humour. Pure class in the treatment of the subject matter. A well worth it move to see.

It was a pleasant surprise to come accross such a movie at a "commercial" movie theatre. That's why I'll be a bit more gracious and rate it 10 instead of 9. The humour in it is very different from the one in movies like Volver. Many situations are funny without beeing unrealistic. Nevertheless I should mention that the unusualness of the situations and conversations is one of its strongest points. I will recommend it to all my acquaintances who are interested in film.

The value of this film is that the charactar of the boys shows why Oxford and Cambrige graduates are different as a group than any other University in the world. Most newspaper critics have missed this aspect of this remarkable film. A brilliant piece of filming and writing. If you dont see this, the film will not interest you. If you do agree with me, You will love every aspect of the remarkable masterpiece!!! A must see!

With Alan Bennett you cannot lose! The many awards for his decades of successful writing are testament to his sensitive character development... the sensitivity of a removed outsider possessing uncanny insight to that which makes up an individual character. Adding to his brilliant character development is the interaction he creates to then call each characer into being. Actors from the original play cast for this movie is especially juicy, giving the characters more than usual believability.

This delightful schoolboy film, in which the Headmaster is the most frequent user of gutter language, has plenty of laughs. In spite of obvious opportunities, it also doesn't insult anyone.
