Loved Brendan Gleeson and his very funny portrayal of a rural Irish policeman - with all his vices intact. Laughed outload several times and also has some hints of depth as well. A great farcical romp!

In Bruge but better. Clever dialogue, great characters, and a solid plot.
| 10/10 | munchmysquid@ - 6 reviews 2.1.2012 - age: 36-49 |
Humour for the easily amused. If your idea of a comedy is Don Cheadle (as an FBI agent) asking a horse if it has seen any of the criminals he was looking for, this is the movie for you. Mark Strong, as one of the hoodlums, was trying VERY hard to imitate Jason Statham in Snatch - and the imitation was embarrassing. Put it this way - if you bumped into this movie while channel-surfing, you would probably watch it for 10 minutes and click to change channels.

Hysterical! Funny in the inappropriate way very politically incorrect. Brendan Gleeson's character is a very rough around the edges police officer but he is very likeable in an cheeky way. Love the scenes with him and his mother, and he and Don Cheadle worked well together as polar opposites. Great film but if you're offended by vulgar language and bad behaviour do stay away.

Very enjoyable dialogue à la Tarantino, and "Americanisms". The film basically pokes fun at the American Crime Genre. Gleason is so enjoyable, as it seems this role was perfectly made for him. It is a simple narrative, but the showcase here is the caustic wit of the script and Gleason's performance.
| 8/10 | fongshui@ - 4 reviews 14.11.2011 - age: 36-49 |
Arch of the story line is pretty standard. But the dialogue and acting is superb to the point where the interaction between the characters rather than the mechanics of the plot have you in thrall. Tarantinoesque dialogue for sure but with the literary and grammatical allusions that are so appropriate for a land with the culture of Ireland. A small gem.

It was a great movie! The language was a bit rough... we've all heard the word before, but perhaps not so frequently. As in all British films, I loved the actors chosen for the characters: gritty, ordinary humans, only one beauty in the bunch. There is depth to the story that isn't apparent on the surface, critical subtleties shape the story and can be easily missed, i.e. an early indelicate scratch foreshadows the story's outcome in large part. I loved the picture even though much of the heavily accented Irish/English dialogue was incomprehensible.

A brilliant little gem of a film. Black humour and sly understated performances mean that this movie is not going to be understood by many, and it is part of the charm that it does not hit you over the head with it. Every line is well crafted and significant. A pity that it will be under the radar for Oscars etc., because it is much more intelligent and subtle than that standard.

Excellent movie, bitter Irish comedy, but, really, not nearly enough cussing for my tastes. I prefer Tarantino, thanks.
| 8/10 | ransacktheelder@ - first review 22.10.2011 - age: 50+ |
This could have been sooo much better, but the dialogue is bizarro and vulgar to the point of spoiling the movie and ruined it for me and my friends.
| 6/10 | mgillmdphd@ - 2 reviews 22.10.2011 - age: 50+ |
I loved this movie. To me it was like an Irish John Wayne, Tarentino, Bad Ass Cop movie. Funny if you like to laugh at things you are not supposed to find funny.

I liked the offbeat humour. Not what I was expecting, but I loved it anyway.
| 9/10 | lundk@ - first review 19.10.2011 - age: 36-49 |
What was everyone expecting when they came in to see this? Well if you saw In Bruges and loved it, you certainly knew what to expect. Great cast, off beat humour and a welcome departure from the tedious Hollywood selection.

I thoroughly enjoyed this film. Delightful. Not a false step anywhere that I could see. Intelligence shone in the acting.
| 9/10 | chatelainefinally@ - 2 reviews 18.10.2011 - age: 50+ |
Made me laugh a lot. The drug smugglers discussing philosophy, the straight-laced American Narcotics agent versus the caustic wit of the Irish guard and the interplay between the crooks and the corrupt cops were priceless. Clever movie!

I love these oddball (non packaged) flicks and this reminds me of In Brugges. Another gem. Probably should have given it a 9!

My wife and I really enjoyed this one. Highly recommended!
| 10/10 | expartepress@ - first review 17.10.2011 - age: 36-49 |
This movie is great! A must see, it is a lighter look on how we use language and judgment on people. People are just people and we are all the equal at the end of the day was the message I got from the movie. Funny as hell!
| 9/10 | roseracco@ - first review 16.10.2011 - age: 36-49 |
Great movie. The acting is excellent. Star studded cast for sure. A must see.

A shame this is being billed as a Thriller. From the reviews below it's clear it's attracting a fair number of the wrong crowd and the wrong pundits (who probably won't even know what the word means, look it up.) It's a feisty little comedy for a thinking audience. Glad some people are enjoying it. Best film I've seen in a long time. You can tell by how the reviewers are divided between low and high. Go see for yourself. As a comedy writer and director, I'd kill to have written this.

Nope. This is pure drech. I was so disappointed. I was expecting too much I guess. This felt like a high school project from Ireland. The popcorn was good though.

A comic gem. Brilliant acting. Raw as hell. Not for the sentimental or dull-witted, but there are lots of other films for them.
| 10/10 | laptop@ - first review 14.10.2011 - age: 36-49 |
Did not know much about the film, but it was presented as the typical buddy film genre, but not in the usual way. I enjoyed it since it took me to another part of the world. Brandon Gleeson always plays characters who have more depth than they seem, which happens here as well. You are really drawn to him and his efforts to do good. The twists and turns are very interesting. This is a different role for Don Cheadle, but he handles being in charge, but not really in control of the situation very well.
| 8/10 | eshiggin521@ - first review 14.10.2011 - age: 50+ |
This movie I went into as not being sure what to expect. NOW this movie,... although not an action movie,... made me laugh,... sit on the edge of my seat,.. and wonder. I think this is a very good movie,... and its story is fun,.. and yet interesting!. Go see this one.
| 8/10 | pjmstewart@ - 7 reviews 14.10.2011 - age: 36-49 |
Too quirky and not funny at all. Why does it say comedy? I heard the f word over 50 times alone. This is dreadful and boring. Works better than sleeping pills to get you to sleep.
| 4/10 | boykoryan@ - 72 reviews 14.10.2011 - age: 26-35 - One reply |
This is NOT a quaint and charming film from Ireland. It is foul and vile with a few jokes thrown in. Period. The cinematography isn't so good either. Cheadle just took the cash and ran, not walked to the bank.
| 3/10 | nursingnorthof60@ - 10 reviews 14.10.2011 - age: 26-35 |
Not the usual offbeat quirky interesting flic from across the pond. Not up to scratch either. Shame, shame, shame. This could have been a little gem.
| 2/10 | arewehereyet@ - 15 reviews 12.10.2011 - age: 50+ |
Mindless drivel and such a disappointment seeing it was a film from Ireland. I expected more and got much less.
| 2/10 | benjustleft@ - 12 reviews 12.10.2011 - age: 36-49 |
Too much swearing and the film loses charm and grace fast. Not funny for a comedy but silly and lame.
| 2/10 | marlenehochbaum@ - 76 reviews 11.10.2011 - age: 50+ |
No, I didn't find the flic that amusing at 10 bux a pop. Why is Don Cheadle in this and why is he directing or producing this drech? About Boyle: What a snarky old fart of a copper! No one talks like that.
| 2/10 | toothdoc999@ - 12 reviews 10.10.2011 - age: 50+ |
I didn't enjoy the film one bit. Too much swearing and this distracts you from the little twits in the town who are pursuing an investigation. Too bizarro for my tastes.
| 1/10 | joeljustleft@ - 275 reviews 10.10.2011 - age: 26-35 |
This film is quirky and full of good moments. It's not 5 stars and is not going to get any oscar nominations. I could have waited to rent it on dvd.
| 6/10 | jilljustleft@ - 315 reviews 10.10.2011 - age: 18-25 |
Dry, Irish humour. Mystery. Brendan Gleeson creates a very interesting character. If you're a fan of Transformers, not for you.
| 8/10 | leegielen@ - 17 reviews 10.10.2011 - age: 26-35 |
I liked it. Maybe a bit too slow at times, but hey: Still better than all that other mindless crap. And one more thing: Costco underwear is now presentable. Finally! :)
| 7/10 | ohelmhausen@ - 6 reviews 8.10.2011 - age: 50+ |
Dreadful, unfunny movie. Couldn't wait for it to end. Probably should've left, but stuck it out, hoping it might turn a corner. Well, it turned several corners (I guess) although none of them interesting. Characters can swear all they want -- doesn't matter to me -- but it doesn't make them more interesting. I was amazed how the filmmaker could spend the entire film concentrating on moments that barely mattered and think he was being clever and original. Poorly developed script, dialogue that was too clever for its own good (does anyone really say these things?), and quirky characters that were more annoying than intriguing. From a hospital bed, I'd have to reach for the morphine drip before watching this mess again.
| 2/10 | vancwish@ - first review 6.10.2011 - age: 36-49 |
I have always been a fan of British Cop/Gangster films and if you are as well, then this is a must see. Sure there is swearing and multiple use of the "F" word, but then this is depicted as the real world, and in the real world police swear as do the bad guys. The majority of reviews are from the 50+ group and as such I'm surprised at some of the negativity of this group. I'm 63, and thought it was extremely well done and the dialogue was right on.
| 9/10 | dlu69er@ - 16 reviews 5.10.2011 - age: 50+ |
Brendan Gleeson was excellent. Even the foul language was refreshing, considering Gleeson's character and his HumDrum job as a police officer without much excitement in his job. Simple, without the Hollywood FX which is so relied upon to entertain. Cheadle also played his part well, but I was expecting more from him. Overall; a refreshing change.
| 9/10 | chacha2@ - 35 reviews 5.10.2011 - age: 50+ |
Fantastic dark comedy with intelligent wit, though the irish brogue can sometimes be a tad hard to understand. Gleeson, Strong and the rest of cast give great performances. Throughly recommended.
| 9/10 | christiane.le@ - 9 reviews 3.10.2011 - age: 26-35 |
An Irish black comedy for sure. All Irish stereotypes are on display and forcibly at that. A difficult film to classify but definitely fascinating. Fast paced action with layered characters. Gleeson and Cheadle are very good as opposites attract.
| 7/10 | o6numbersix@ - 76 reviews 28.9.2011 - age: 50+ |
Went to see this movie based on the reviews saying it was quite funny. Couldn't be further form the truth. I might have laughed - was it twice? The movie also dragged and we seriously considered leaving half way through, but kept hoping it would get better. Don't waste your money. I couldn't agree more with the reviewer below - Might have watched it from a hospital sick bed if nothing else was on, and I could not reach the remote!

Except for repeated f--k, english subtitles would have been helpful. Old type comedy/intrigue.
