A good and interesting story with great actors. It's supposed to be a true story, but it's hard to tell what's fact and what's fiction. It really doesn't matter, though, since the movie can make it on its own.

Not bad for a true story. Somehow it kinda lacked something something. Otherwise it was what I expected just blend.
| 7/10 | shazjoao@ - 1723 reviews 19.11.2012 |
It has well developed characters that we understand and care about, and enough action and subplots to keep us entertained. The acting is so smooth, we don't notice it. It's a period piece where the feeling of pre-World War 2, rural America is well established. The movies produces that "willing suspension of disbelief" which is so critical in good fiction.

The movie is good, but what I want to say that hasn't been said before is how good Guy Pierce is, he had me totally hating his character, Tom Hardy was good but Guy is the one who really blew me away with his acting. So glad I saw this movie, in fact I'd like to see it again.

I'm really happy I went to see this movie. Everything from the acting to the costumes were on point. It really sends you back into time when this took place. Tom Hardy continues to impress with his roles. I definitely recommend this movie.

I loved this movie! Great couple movie, was exiting all the way through, one of the best movies I have seen in a while.

See it now!!! It's beyond lawless! Gary Oldman's acting is so superb it should be illegal! Nick Cave's writing is awesome!!! One great party of a movie!!!

Movie had a great story line, great action and characters, Tom Hardy is a beast like he always is.

The events were supposedly based on a true story. I thought the storyline was uninteresting, and not at all exciting. Did not really like, cheered or cared for any of the characters at all. Expecting much more from this movie but was not really impressed.
| 5/10 | peterm55@ - 46 reviews 8.10.2012 - age: 50+ |
This movie didn't disappoint. Action from the get go-- An excellent cast, storyline and totally authentic to the era. It was more violent than I expected but not being too squeamish, I struggled thru. Would definitely go see it again. If you're looking for an original movie, than go see Lawless.

I really enjoyed this film! Kept my attention throughout.

It was well done, other than the annoying Shia Labeouf it was a good movie.
| 8/10 | ditiberia@ - 81 reviews 24.9.2012 - age: 36-49 |
Great acting and dramatization of true events, especially since it still goes on today. Felt like I got my money's worth.

A movie that grips your attention and doesn't let it go for days.

Great movie, good acting, excellent costumes/makeup/props which really made it feel like the 20’s. Lawless was violent, but was expected since it’s about bootlegging. Really enjoyed it.

Crazy! Master piece of its own. Perfect characters played by perfect actors! My boyfriend hyped it up because he mentioned Tom Hardy -Bane from Batman was the main guy so that convinced me enough to see it. From beginning to end I was cringing with the intense fighting scenes especially from Tom hardy himself. Drama, suspense, thrilling, action, bit of comedy what more can you ask for! Good lengthed movie too! Definitely a gem of the year.

Gorgeous imagery. Fabulous acting. Great story. All the scenes look authentic from that era right down to the doors not shutting right on the old cars and homes that were used and lived in with that era of people doing what they were doing. You will be amazed at the acting of Shilo and Tom. Go see it now!

My god, Hollywood finally made something original and actually worth watching. I am a fan of Shia LaBeouf and he did a great job in this film. Also after seeing this film I have become a fan of Tom Hardy. I have not seen a movie like this since "Into the Wild" and "No country for old men". If you are like me and are sick of Hollywood remakes/reboots and are looking for something new and original, definitely check this movie out.

If you've seen the trailer then you've seen the movie. Cardboard characters, no plot, no suspense, little or no action. A very boring movie. Save your money on this one.

Good western. I wish the story would talk about more of the gangster side of things. Worth seeing if you like westerns, also there are some funny parts as well :)

Ridiculous editing and directing. The tale of bootlegging in an area of country the story was never told. Regardless of the fresh concept there is no cast chemistry or climax, one speed with very few movie sets.
| 3/10 | perfectedpicture@ - 23 reviews 16.9.2012 - age: 26-35 |
Slow, dark and disturbing. A poor script that jumps around and then tries tragically to tie it all together. This is a rental, not a big screen gem.
| 6/10 | photosundown@ - 25 reviews 16.9.2012 - age: 18-25 |
I really enjoyed this movie. I saw Killer Joe the week before, and this movie was not anywhere near as disturbing as that one. Lawless was violent, but it was enjoyable. You rooted for the characters and hoped they'd win over the evil Rakes. I thought Guy Pearce was terrific as the evil Charlie Rakes. I giggled every time he came on the screen - he reminded me of an evil Scarlet Pimpernel.

First I am no fan of violence BUT I am not naive and realize any movie based during prohibition is not going to be about hearts flowers and sugar plums. The movie showed how prohibition opened up a criminal element and violence that did not need to exist especially the problems in that era were not due to drinking but unemployment after the first world war, environmental factors and social pressures.

Bullets on broadway in a slow Model T Ford. The true story of backwoods bootleggers who took a foolish stand against the law. Embodied with a great cast as well as the directors of film and photography, the script lacked the true triumph of the original gangster.

The storyline is great. So many twists throughout and the acting is great too. We havent had a lot of movies in this last year where you can't really predict the ending.

I love Shia LeBeouf, if you add Tom Hardy into the mix, then you've got yourself a winner. This movie captivated me right from the beginning. The plot was very interesting, and the character's were all fascinating. I recommend this movie whole-heartedly. If you haven't seen it yet, you don't know what you're missing.

I had to sit on my opinion of a rating after seeing this movie... there were certain elements I really wanted to ponder, and it turns out I enjoyed it. Tom Hardy is always amazing in his roles, and the story line is not only true but intriguing.

Did know much before walking in the theater... But what a surprise I was in for, the story was great and the actors excellent. I'm begining to think Tom Hardy becoming this generation Marlon Brandon...

LaBeouf actually isn't half bad - I must admit he won me over in this role, while obviously the other actors in the cast are solid. This period bootlegging drama is like "Dukes of Hazard" meets "The Road". This is a film to see if you want to be transported to another time and place, but not so much if you were a fan of LaBeouf's Transformers work. Bravo to Hillcoat, as he has made three great films in a row now!

Never liked Shia Laboof, he is ok.. Tom Hardy is fantastic! Female cast members are very good. Bad guy is real hateable! Movie moves a lot slower than I expected and at times does not makes sense. Also accents are at times mumbled and hard to understand. (In general often surprised how much of the talking in movies is mumbling these days) Keeps you very interested. My son and I both really enjoyed it. A few very violent scenes but not as bad as I would have thought from some of the reviews. Def not for the weak stomach but only a few gory violent scenes. Great time era movie!

Great movie, very bloody, great story, but due to its nature of being a true story, there are some missing elements, story jumps and a certain awesome character just disappears. Overall, it's great to see Shia back on the big screen, and it is a good movie, just there are problems.

Just came back from seeing this film and for the most part my expectations were met or exceeded. Excellent performances by all actors involved, especially Tom Hardy and Shia Labeouf. My only gripe with the acting is that I felt Guy Pierce's performance was a little too reminiscent of a serious version of Jeffrey Combs performance as a mentally unstable law officer in Frighteners (1996) Beautifully shot scenery and stylish costumes round out the positives in making this a pleasurable view.

This story is based on true facts and I appreciated the historical side of the movie. The plot is not so surprising but the actors give a good performance. Indeed, the movie is pleasant to watch.

I went into this move expecting too much blood and gore for my taste, however as my husband was anxious to see it, I went. Turned out to be one of the better movies I have seen in a very long time. Knowing the moving was based on a true story made it fascinating and I was a fan within the first 5 minutes. Wonderful actors doing a fantastic job. Might go to see it again!

One of Tom Hardy's best performances if not his best, which says a lot. I think this is Guy Pierce's best performance and Gary Oldman has fun with his role. Gary Oldman plays an old school gangster. I even thought Shia Leboeuf did a fantastic job in the midst of this all star cast. The action scenes are superb as they are realistic, but very violent, which is a big part of the theme of the movie. Not a bad thing to say about the movie. Better than expected. Thoroughly enjoyed my time at the theatre.

I found a refreshing uniqueness and authenticity to this film; so far away from the typical, mainstream pictures on the big screen. I love stories based on history; it makes the movie that much more intriguing. Excellent characterizations, plot, settings, costuming and script. The movie, for me, portrayed many facets of the Prohibition era and the involvement of the notorious Chicago mobsters, depicting a more thorough realization of this period in history. Although I had some idea of bootlegging back in the days, it was shocking to watch the very graphic and gory details that ensued during this infamous period. Scary and so realistic that it captivated the audience. I covered my eyes at times, peeking through my fingers. :)The Bondurant Brothers and their story was simply fascinating and not to be believed, especially the "immortal" one. Great depiction of corruption, violence that accompanies it, temptation, loyalty, love and good versus evil. I think that this film is Oscar material and as always, Jessica Chastain, Gary Oldman and Hardy give very strong and incredibly noteworthy performances. The three brothers portray their uique characters well and make for an interesting but loyal blending of this family. I would like to read the book that this movie was based on, entitled "the Wettest County in the World." Great job; no boring moments for me. The suspense kept me at the edge of my seat.
